3 Tips for Dating While Sober

Having a healthy romantic relationship is an important part of life for many people. If you’re currently sober, it can also be more challenging to find a suitable partner. You shouldn’t sacrifice your hard work for a relationship, but it is possible for people in recovery to date in a healthy way. Here are a few ways to stay on track.

1. Be Forthcoming About Your Sobriety

All good relationships begin with a foundation of honesty. Accordingly, you must be straightforward about your sobriety to prospective dates. You can decide how much detail to provide, but you should be clear about abstaining from alcohol and other drugs. If this is a deal breaker for your date, you’re better off knowing early on. You can also avoid being put in an awkward situation if your date consumes alcohol in front of you.

2. Maintain Firm Boundaries

Part of maintaining a sober lifestyle is establishing boundaries. For instance, if you feel uncomfortable going on dates in a bar or other establishment where alcohol is available, it’s perfectly acceptable to express that to your date. You should also be wary of anyone who attempts to pressure you into doing something you don’t feel comfortable with. Maintaining your boundaries is a form of respecting yourself, which is key to staying on track with your sobriety.

3. Know the Signs of Codependency

Codependency is an unhealthy relationship status where one person needs the other to feel fulfilled and happy. It’s common in relationships that involve substance abuse and dependency, as the non-addicted partner may become “addicted” to helping the other party. It can also occur in sober relationships but can be just as damaging to both people. In healthy relationships, both partners are heard and respected. Both can make decisions on their own, and while they enjoy the company of the other, they don’t “need” them to be happy.
